Practical Madagascar
Discovering Madagascar
Madagascar is often called the Continent Island, the Red Island or the Eighth Continent; it is a member of the African Union. The country is home to more than 12,000 plant species, 70-80% of them endemic — one of the world's richest and most diverse floras.
Fauna
Lemurs remain the country's mascot, but you'll also find the world's most beautiful chameleons, magnificent butterflies, rare birds, reptiles, great cetaceans and astonishing marine life.
Flora
Several baobab species, carnivorous plants, medicinal plants and over a thousand orchids. Essential oils of cinnamon, clove, niaouli, ylang-ylang, geranium and citronella are renowned worldwide.
Climate
A dry season (April to November) and a rainy season (December to March) — though the climate varies by region: humid in the East, dry in the South.
Visa and formalities
Visas can be issued on arrival at Antananarivo and Nosy Be airports. For stays under 30 days, allow about €35 (MGA 125,000, rate-dependent), payable in cash. Passport valid at least 6 months after your return date.
